Celebrating LGBTQ Pride Month with a “Real Boy” Documentary Screening & Discussion – June 12, 2018

An intimate story of a family in transition, Real Boy follows the journey of trans teen Bennett as he navigates adolescence, sobriety, and the physical and emotional ramifications of his changing gender identity. Through the process, his mother Suzy makes her own transformation — traveling a difficult road toward accepting that the daughter she raised as Rachael is now her son Bennett.

I’m organizing this program for the City of West Hollywood’s Human Rights Speakers Series and IMP’s Community Perspectives Film Series. Real Boy is a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Documentary nominee. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, Shaleece Haas; singer Joe Stevens, who appears in the film; and West Hollywood Transgender Advisory Board Co-chairs Alexis Sanchez and Jaye Johnson.
